Veteran Australia opener David Warner is winning hearts in England, particularly the Barmy Army during the ongoing 2023 Ashes Test. The 36-year-old failed to impress during the ongoing first Ashes Test, scoring nine and 36 runs in the first and second innings, respectively.

On Day 4 (June 19) of the first Test, when fielding on the boundary, the crowd in the Eric Hollies Stand pelted Aussie fielders with chants and sledges. Notably, the stand is named after the late Eric Hollies, a famous leg spinner who had represented Warwickshire and England.

Warner passed the boundary rope with his hand to his ear and asked for more from the spectators at the stand and then stood with his hands on his hips. However, the Aussie’s stand was welcomed by the Barmy Army during the heated contest.

“A number of the Aussie players were serenaded by the Hollies Stand but no surprises that David Warner got the loudest response. ‘And he was the only one to then cross the rope, face the partisan crowd with hands on the hip like he was asking them to give him their best,” a media person posted on social media.

“Just witnessed David Warner channelling his inner rockstar! Hands on hip, asking for the crowd’s best? He’s definitely mastered the art of ‘cricket and roll’,” posted another.

Virat Kohli took on Barmy Army in a similar fashion in 2021-2022 Test series against England

Notably, this is not the first time a cricketer has gone along with the Barmy Army. Former India skipper Virat Kohli taunted the English fans on various occasions.

One of the most famous incidents that took place during India’s fourth Test of the 2021/22 series, was when Kohli held his hand to his ear with England in deep trouble and the crowd was silent. Notably, India won that game by 157 runs to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series, after being bowled out for just 191 in the first innings.
