Australia skipper Pat Cummins has opened up about the selection conundrum over multiple positions ahead of the fourth Ashes Test at the Old Trafford in Manchester. A win in the fourth Test will help Australia retain the prestigious urn and also clinch their first Test series win on English soil since 2001.
There are major discussions going on regarding the inclusion of some players, including the likes of David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, and Scott Boland, in the upcoming fourth Test. Cummins said that Warner will open with Khawaja despite his poor outing in the third Test at Headingley.
“We’ll chat about it, but I imagine it will stay the same,” Cummins said on the opening combination, as quoted by Sportskeeda.
Cummins further said that Cameron Green, who was sidelined during the Leeds Test due to injury, will be back to the squad. The 30-year-old also said that the selection decision regarding the two all-rounders is a difficult one.
“That’s the main change from last week, Cam comes back online. Basically, how do you fit seven really good batters and a keeper into a team or does someone need to miss out?” the Aussie skipper added.
It’s all really conditions based: Cummins
While speaking about the bowling combination, Cummins said that it always depends on the condition. He then cited the example of Todd Murphy, Cummins said that he would love to bowl the youngster a bit earlier, but the ball seemed to swing and seam a little bit. Additionally, the tourists have rotated their bowling consistently in the ongoing series, with skipper Pat Cummins being the constant presence.
“Every situation is different. We’ve played games with one quick [in India], we’ve played some games with heaps of quicks. It’s all really conditions based. As I said last week about Toddy, I would have loved to bowl him a bit more but there wasn’t a heap of overs in the game, the ball seemed to swing and seam a little bit, so that’s certainly something to weigh up this week,” Cummins concluded.
