Former England wicketkeeper and skipper, Alec Stewart, extended his relationship with Surrey County after having stepped down from the role of club director after 11 years. He will now act as a high-performance adviser in a bid to reduce his workload significantly.

The key reason behind his new decision comes amid his wife battling breast cancer. Notably, his wife Lynn Stewart has been fighting out the disease for 12 long years now. Hence, to be by her side and take care of her, Stewart will now dedicate more time to family commitments and the treatment of his wife.

Meanwhile, Alec Stewart will resume his Surrey association in January next year with a cap on the number of days he will spend with the county annually. During his new stint, the legendary figure will hope to carry on the good work which was the county lifting the county championship title twice so far. Hence, the former England legend will hope to drive Surrey to their third title in tandem in his new role.

“There are bits and pieces that have crept up recently. It’s never going away. It’s managing it. That is, there are some goodish times, and then the last four weeks have been tough for her. And then it’s just putting faith in the oncologist we’ve had from day one, who’s been brilliant. But yes, now I’ve got housework duties, cooking duties, and other duties on the agenda which I do to the best of my ability, which isn’t great, but you’ve got to try, haven’t you?” Stewart told The Telegraph.

“It is two weeks on and two weeks off with chemo and the oncologist has said we will attack it with vigor. And hopefully, make life more pleasant. So, it’s just managing it really, dealing with it, which is what we’ve always done. She’s the brave one,” the 61-year-old continued.

Stewart represented Surrey as a player for over two decades

Meanwhile, speaking of Alec Stewart’s contribution to the renowned county in the capacity of a player, the former England wicketkeeper amassed 40,396 runs for Surrey. It is worth mentioning that he played for the county for nearly 22 years. The Merton-born will now join the current head coach Gareth Batty and skipper Rory Burns in the setup.

Besides, he will also be guiding and grooming the upcoming talents coming from their pathway system. Furthermore, the club has decided to not hire any replacement for Stewart as the Director of the club. Interestingly enough, Alec Stewart’s father Micky too played for Surrey County.

“Everyone knows my love of the club and what it means to me and therefore I’m very pleased that the club wanted me to continue in this new role that has been created,” Stewart concluded.
