Afghanistan batter Rahmat Shah was part of an unusual dismissal during the third ODI against South Africa at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Sunday, September 22. The ongoing match is the final game of the three-match series, with Afghanistan already having clinched the series by winning the first two matches. However, this dead rubber still holds significance for both teams as they look to end on a high note. Meanwhile, Hashmatullah Shahidi called it correctly at the toss and chose to bat first.

The funny incident took place in the ninth over of Afghanistan’s innings. With the score at 38-1, Rahmanullah Gurbaz facing Lungi Ngidi’s final bowl of the over, attempted to drive the ball past the bowler. But as the right-hand batter hit the shot, the ball bounced off the pitch and caught Ngidi by surprise. The South African pacer’s attempt to catch the ball resulted in the first deflection, sending it towards the non-striker’s end.

Shah, the non-striker who had taken a few steps down the pitch, found himself in the ball’s trajectory. In a split-second reaction, he turned away, but the ball struck his shoulder, deflected off his body, and dislodged the bails at the non-striker’s end.

Rahmat Shah departs for a six-ball one

The umpires, after a brief consultation, ruled Shah run out. As Ngidi had touched the ball before it hit the stumps, the Laws of Cricket deemed it a legitimate dismissal. This unfortunate dismissal saw Shah departing for just one run off six balls, leaving Afghanistan at 38/2.

Meanwhile, a similar dismissal took place in 2006 when Australia’s Andrew Symonds hit the ball onto his non-striking partner Michael Clarke, resulting in a catch at mid-on. About the match, the hosts are in tricky position after getting bowled out for 169 after 34 overs.
