Ahead of India’s three-match T20I series against Bangladesh, skipper Suryakumar Yadav was stumped by an unexpected question, focusing on his potential as an IPL captain.

The 34-year-old has become India’s key player, particularly in the shortest-game format. While he leads the national side in T20Is, he has yet to captain an IPL team. During the pre-match press conference, a reporter asked the cricketer about his captaincy in the cash-rich league, the cricketer came up with an interesting answer. He also reflected on his experiences with Mumbai Indians

“Aapne googly daal diya aapne (laughs) (You put me in a spot with a wrong ‘un). Really enjoying this new role (as India captain). When I was playing under Rohit bhai’s captaincy in MI, I used to give my input on whatever I felt at that time,” he said at the Press Conference.

I have learnt from other captains on how to take the team forward. Aage dekhte hain: Suryakumar Yadav

The Mumbai-born has a good track record as a captain so far. In 2023, he first led the team in the five-match T20I series against Australia at home and guided the side to a 4-1 win. Later that year his first international assignment as a skipper was against South Africa, which India drew 1-1.

Recently, India after winning the T20 World Cup 2024, travelled to Sri Lanka, and under Surya’s captaincy, the side clinched the series 3-0.

The right-hand batter mentioned that he is having a good time leading the nation in T20Is and isn’t very concerned about IPL captaincy. Yadav is excited about what the future holds for him.

“For India also feeling good. I captained against Sri Lanka previously against Australia and South Africa. I have learnt from other captains on how to take the team forward. Aage dekhte hain. Chalte rahta hain. Baaki aapko pata toh chal hee jayega ((Let’s see how it goes. Rest you will know in due course of time,” he added.
