The year 2024 witnessed a lot of memorable events in the game of cricket. In the international circuit, the T20 World Cup was the biggest event which saw some exhilarating action. This was also the biggest of its kind as 20 teams participated in the main round for the first time. Afghanistan turned heads with some excellent performances during the marquee event and made it to the semi-finals of a World Cup for the first time.

Test cricket also continued with the World Test Championship (WTC 2025) reaching the business end. Under Temba Bavuma’s astute leadership, South Africa made it to the finals for the first time. Meanwhile, ODI cricket took a backseat as there were not many 50-over matches played in the year.

During the year, there were a lot of captains who made a mark with their sharp cricketing brains and the ability to keep their composure in crunch situations. 5. Charith Asalanka

Charith Asalanka took over as Sri Lanka’s white-ball captain ahead of the home series against India right after the T20 World Cup in June. The Lankan Lions lost the T20 series but they defeated India comprehensively in the ODIs.

Asalanka has combined well with Sri Lankan head coach Sanath Jayasuriya and produced some promising results for the Asian side. The southpaw led Sri Lanka in 21 matches in 2024. Under his leadership, the Lankans won 10 matches and lost eight. Two games were tied, while one ended without a result. Asalanka finished with a win percentage of 47.62.

4. Aiden Markram

Aiden Markram will go down in history as the first cricketer to lead South Africa to the finals of a World Cup. Under his captaincy, the Proteas managed to reach the T20 World Cup final in June. They suffered an agonising seven-run defeat against India in the summit clash but received massive praise for the way they performed in the tournament.

Markram won 12 out of the 22 games he captained in 2024. The Rainbow Nation lost 10 matches under his reign. The right-handed batter finished with a win percentage of 54.55.

3. Jos Buttler

Jos Buttler had another decent year as England’s white-ball captain. He ended the year with a win percentage of 60. Buttler led the Three Lions to the T20 World Cup semi-final. As a captain, he is known for taking risks, similar to his batting template.

In 2024, Buttler led England in 15 matches. The European nation won nine out of these games and lost four. Two games ended without a result. The wicketkeeper-batter finished with a win percentage of 60.

2. Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma managed to end India’s 11-year wait for an ICC title. He guided the Men in Blue to the T20 World Cup title in June. The Mumbai batter led from the front as he finished as the second-highest run-getter in the global event. While the first half of the year was full of ups for the Nagpur-born, the second half saw him drawing flak for India’s Test series defeats against New Zealand and Australia.

Rohit led India in 28 matches in 2024. The Asian giants won 17 matches and lost eight. Two games were tied, while one ended without a result. Rohit had a win percentage of 60.71.

1. Mitchell Marsh

Mitchell Marsh might have recently lost his place in Australia’s Test side but he continues to be an integral member of the limited-overs setup. The seam-bowling all-rounder had a fine year as the Australian captain, even though the Men in Yellow couldn’t reach the knockout stage in the T20 World Cup.

In 20 matches under Marsh’s leadership, the Aussies won 15 and lost just five. He finished the year with a win percentage of 75.
