3 Players who can replace Shikhar Dhawan as PBKS Captain in IPL 2025

After 2021, KL Rahul parted ways with Punjab Kings (PBKS) and the franchise signed up the India veteran Shikhar Dhawan and appointed him their captain. Holding the reins of the side, Dhawan hasn’t delivered impactful results to the side, thus far. Dhawan will be seen as a skipper in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season and this time, he will have to prove his leadership skills.

However, if Dhawan fails as a skipper again, the Punjab team management might handle the leadership responsibility to any other stalwart. Currently, the franchise has three contenders who have the potential to replace Dhawan as a captain in 2025.

3. Liam Livingstone

Liam Livingstone was seen as a captain of Lancashire Lightning in the 2023 Vitality Blast. Noting his experience, Punjab might hand him the captaincy mantle in 2025. As a batter, he was sensational for the side in 2022, and if he justifies his role in the upcoming season, Punjab might not hesitate in appointing him as their captain for the 2025 season.

The right-handed England batter has scored 828 runs in 32 matches at a strike rate of 165.60 in the cash-rich league. Talking about his batting numbers for PBKS, he has amassed 716 runs in 23 matches at a stellar strike rate of 174.20.

2. Jonny Bairstow

PBKS might also trust Jonny Bairstow to lead the team as he has immense experience in T20 Internationals (T20Is). In the league, he started his journey in 2019 and has added 1291 runs to his profile in 39 matches at a magnificent strike rate of 142.65.

In 2023, the England stalwart failed to show up for Punjab after failing to recover from his injury. The English veteran will make a comeback in the league with his participation in the upcoming season. Back in 2022, he debuted for Punjab and did his job efficiently with the bat, scoring 253 runs in 11 games at a strike rate of 144.57.

1. Sam Curran

Sam Curran was snapped up for a hefty sum of INR 18.50 crore in the 2023 IPL auction. In return, Curran couldn’t do big with both bat and ball, but the franchise has shown faith in him as he will be a part of the side in the upcoming season.

In the 2023 season, the 25-year-old was also seen as a skipper in three matches in Dhawan’s absence due to an injury. The youngster led the team from the front in all three games and delivered two victories to his side in the absence of the regular skipper. Noting his impressive performance as a skipper in 2023, PBKS might assign him the task of leading the side in 2025.
