3 players who can replace Faf du Plessis as RCB Captain in IPL 2025

South Africa’s Faf du Plessis, who serves Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has not announced his retirement from T20 leagues and white-ball formats of international cricket but noting his age of 39, his retirement from all forms of cricket can’t be ruled out this year.

If that happens, RCB will have to appoint a new skipper for their side. In the previous season, Virat Kohli was seen handling the captaincy mantle in du Plessis’ absence. After the Protea legend’s retirement from IPL, Kohli can be seen as a captain during emergencies but he might not be taking the role of a full-time skipper again. Following du Plessis’ retirement, some names might become the favourites to lead the side. 

Here are three players who can replace Faf du Plessis as RCB Captain in next IPL season:

3. Cameron Green

RCB have traded Australia’s young all-rounder Cameron Green from Mumbai Indians (MI). This year, the RCB team management will set their eyes on Australia stalwart and he will look to be impressive with both bat and ball. In the previous season, Green looked decent with his bat in his debut season for Mumbai Indians (MI). 

If Green lives upto the expectations of the RCB team management, the franchise might appoint him the skipper of the side. The Western Australia cricketer will be only 25 in 2025 and he can be seen as a long-term skipper by the franchise.

2. Glenn Maxwell

Glenn Maxwell has been associated with the franchise since 2021 and since then, he has done a fine job for the team. With 1214 runs in 42 matches at a strike rate of 161.43, he is the fifth-leading run-scorer for the side. With his performance in the last three seasons, he has won the confidence of the team management.

After du Plessis’ retirement, Maxwell’s name might also be considered for captaincy. The veteran has played a lot of cricket in the cash-rich league and international cricket. He can do wonders for the team with his experience and leadership skills.

1. Ben Stokes

Ben Stokes didn’t take part in the 2024 IPL auction but he might submit his name in the 2025 auction to get a new team. Noting Stokes’ stint as England Test skipper, RCB might not hesitate to splurge huge money to sign him up. Although the England stalwart failed to do big in the 2023 season, his overall IPL record is decent.

The veteran all-rounder has played 45 matches in the cash-rich league and racked up 935 runs and 28 wickets. In the 2025 season, Stokes might attract buyers to spend an enormous amount and RCB might be one of those.
