Vaibhav Suryavanshi scripted history in the ongoing one-off U-19 Test between India and Australia by scoring a breathtaking century off just 58 balls at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Day 2. The 13-year-old became the fastest centurion for India in U-19 Tests.

Suryavanshi also missed the overall record for the fastest century in U-19 Tests by a whisker. It is currently held by Moeen Ali, who slammed a 56-ball century back in 2005. Coming back to Suryavanshi’s brilliance in the first session on Tuesday, October 01, the left-handed batter hit 14 fours and four sixes en route to his milestone. He was unfortunately dismissed shortly after he got to the magical three-figure mark, as Christian Howe got him run out for a 62-ball 104. The youngster finished his knock with a mind-boggling strike rate of 167.74.

Suryavanshi turned heads last season when he became the youngest debutant in the history of the Ranji Trophy. He represented Bihar at the age of just 12 and broke the record held by Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh. The talented cricketer has played two first-class matches so far.

Vihaan Malhotra’s able support

The Aussies were bowled out on Day 1 for 293 after Riley Kingsell and Aidan O’Connor scored half-centuries. For India, Samarth Nagaraj and Mohammed Enaan picked up three wickets apiece. Australia have had a rough time on their tour to India as they were whitewashed in the Youth ODI series which preceded the red-ball encounter. Suryavanshi’s latest assault will haunt Hayden Schiller and Co. for quite some time.

While Suryavanshi was firing on all cylinders, fellow opener Vihaan Malhotra (49*) also played his shots and gave him good support. The 17-year-old is on the cusp of his half-century, having hit eight boundaries already at Lunch. The Indians will look to take a big first-innings lead to put the tourists under pressure in their second innings.

India is being led by batting all-rounder Soham Patwardhan, while the Aussies have wicketkeeper-batter Simon Budge at the helm.
