Duleep Trophy, one of the premier domestic competitions of India, started in 1961. Over the years, multiple legendary cricketers featured in the tournament, and some high-profile foreign cricketers as well, such as Kevin Pietersen, James Tredwell, Matt Prior, and Michael Lumb among others. Inviting foreign teams was once a tradition that BCCI followed, but it was eventually scrapped due to scheduling conflicts.
Over the years, it has been contested between various zones of India, that is divided between North, South, Central, West, and East and the most recently North-East Zone too was created to give opportunity to players of that region. However, the BCCI scraped that idea in 2024. Secretary Jay Shah in return decided to create four teams — named India A, B, C, and D.
In the new format, all the available players including senior internationals were divided into four teams, who would compete with each other in a league stage. This new format would also help junior cricketers to play more with the senior internationals, and it would also promote red-ball cricket in India.
