Women’s T20 World Cup 2024: Predicting India’s Playing XI for their clash against Australia

It is a key game for India as they get ready to play Australia in their final league game of Women’s T20 World Cup on Sunday. Pakistan’s loss to Australia has made things easier for India and they will also hope that Sri Lanka can beat New Zealand to make it even easier. India began the tournament with the huge loss to New Zealand by 58 runs. 

Harmanpreet Kaur and her team then followed it up with a timely win over Pakistan last Sunday. India then beat Sri Lanka by 82 runs to go second in the table and also turn their net run-rate around. Before the tournament had started Kaur had said that her team can beat Australia anytime. 

So far India and Australia have played each other on 34 occasions. The Aussies held the sway as they have won 25 times and India has just won 8 games with one game yielding no result. India still carries wounds of losing the 2020 T20 World Cup to Australia by 85 runs as this was the closest, they came to winning the title.  

Here is the likely India XI for the final T20I against Australia 

Top order –Shafali Varma, Smriti Mandhana, and Jemimah Rodrigues

In the game against Sri Lanka, both the Indian openers made a rapid start and added 96 for the 1st wicket. Shafali Varma scored 43 off 40 balls with 4 boundaries. The young batter will want to do the same against Australia and help India reach the final four. Smriti Mandhana batted well to score 50 off 38 balls with four boundaries and a six. Jemimah Rodrigues hit 16 runs from just 10 balls and helped India reach a huge 172 on the board. 

Middle Order – Harmanpreet Kaur, Richa Ghosh, Deepti Sharma

If India has to make it to the semi-finals of the tournament, Harmanpreet Kaur has to come up with the good again. The veteran Indian skipper played a marvellous innings to score 52 not out against Sri Lanka. Richa Ghosh scored 6 not out and held onto 2 catches and one stumping behind the stumps. Deepti Sharma bowled 3.5 overs and got 1/16 including the last Lankan wicket to seal the win for India. 

Lower-order – S Sajana, Arundhati Reddy, Shreyanka Patil

India didn’t need the big hitting Sajana’s batting skills during their win over Sri Lanka. Against Australia it will be different as the 29-year-old will be expected to play a huge role towards the end of the innings. Arundhati Reddy was the best bowler for India on Wednesday as she picked 3/19 from her 4 overs. Shreyanka Patil had yet another amazing outing with 1/15 from her 4 overs to stifle the opposition batters.

Tail enders – Asha Shobana and Renuka Singh Thakur

Veteran spinner Asha Shobana picked 3/19 from her four overs to break the back of Sri Lankan batting. Harmanpreet Kaur and rest of India will hope that Shobhana can continue her form and nip out the Australian batters as well. Pacer Renuka Singh Thakur bowled her heart out and picked 2/16 to dent the Lankans early and hand India a huge win.
