The cricket season is in full flow and cricket fans are excited about the IPL matches happening right now, but right after the IPL, we have the marquee event of the year: the T20 World Cup in the US and West Indies!
India will aim to emerge victorious in this year’s T20 World Cup after losing the ODI World Cup last year at home. But T20 cricket is India’s weakest format and given the dynamic nature of T20 cricket where any team can beat the other team on a given, it won’t be an easy task.
One of the big questions before the selectors would be to pick up the best wicketkeeper choice before the World Cup as the choice is not easy. This article will talk about the 3 players who might be the wicketkeeper for India in the T20 World Cup.
1. Rishabh Pant
Rishabh Pant’s journey to the T20 World Cup is an inspiring story of resilience. Remember, it was just December 2022 that a serious accident left everyone questioning if he’d ever play cricket again. But Pant defied the odds! In a remarkably short span of 15 months, he was back on the field, competing at a high level.
His first match back was a bit rough. His batting wasn’t quite as sharp as usual, a bit “rusty” as some commentators might say. This is understandable after such a long absence. However, one thing remained clear: his wicket keeping skills were still top-notch. He even pulled off a great stumping during the game, proving his reflexes were as sharp as ever behind the wickets.
But Pant didn’t stop there. The next three matches were a different story altogether. He impressively found his batting form, scoring two fifties (that’s cricket talk for scoring over 50 runs) at a blistering pace. This return to form shows he’s not just back, he’s back with a bang!
These performances haven’t gone unnoticed by the bigwigs. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah himself hinted that Pant is a strong contender for the wicketkeeper’s spot in the upcoming T20 World Cup. As long as Pant stays healthy and keeps performing well in the IPL, there’s a very good chance he’ll be the one keeping wickets for India on the biggest stage.
2. Sanju Samson
Sanju Samson is another strong candidate to be India’s wicket keeper for the T20 World Cup. He has a big advantage: he bats in the middle overs (between the first few overs and the last few overs). This is important because India already has strong players at the beginning of the innings (top order). So, having a wicketkeeper who can also contribute runs in the middle overs would be very valuable for the team.
Sanju Samson started his IPL season with a bang! He scored an impressive 82 runs in just 52 balls, and that was without getting dismissed (unbeaten). If he keeps playing this well throughout the IPL, we might very well see him on the plane to the T20 World Cup in June!
3. KL Rahul
KL Rahul’s name keeps popping up when it comes to wicket keepers for the Indian team, especially in shorter formats like T20 cricket. Last year’s ODI World Cup saw him take on the wicketkeeping role, and he did a great job catching balls behind the batsman (behind the stumps).
Right now, the team selectors are unsure about who will be the wicketkeeper for the T20 World Cup. This might work in KL Rahul’s favour. Here’s why: he’s currently the wicketkeeper for his IPL team, the Lucknow SuperGiants. So, he already has experience playing that role in high-pressure situations. If he keeps performing well as a wicketkeeper in the IPL, the selectors might decide to give him that responsibility for the T20 World Cup as well.
