Top 3 teams who failed to reach IPL playoffs most number of times

The Indian Premier League is one of the biggest cricketing leagues in the world. Since its inception in 2008, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings have ruled the league by winning nine out of 15 seasons. Other successful teams are Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Gujarat Titans.

However, some teams always failed to capitalize on the opportunity and have choked in crunch situations. Some teams have even failed to qualify for the playoffs as many times as many trophies as Mumbai Indians trophies.

So in today’s article, we will discuss those teams who have failed to qualify for the playoffs most times.

3. Delhi Capitals (6 playoffs in 16 seasons)

Delhi Capitals

The Delhi Capitals have had an incredible run in previous seasons. They made the playoffs for the third year in a row in the IPL 2021. The team performed admirably under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer. They reached the finals of the IPL 2020 for the first time in their history but finished as runners-up. The Capitals’ overall IPL winning percentage is around 50%.

However, apart from these performances in the last few seasons DC has been mediocre throughout their journey. In 16 seasons they failed to capitalize on the opportunity. They qualified for the playoffs just six times in 16 seasons and have been one of the most underperforming teams.

2. Rajasthan Royals (5 playoffs in 14 seasons)

Rajasthan Royals

Since the league’s establishment in 2008, the Rajasthan Royals have had a volatile ride. They won the inaugural IPL season with a mix of local and international talent, led by Shane Warne. Ajinkya Rahane leads the squad in run-scoring with 3,367 runs, while Shane Watson leads the team in wicket-taking with 67.

The Royals have made the playoffs five times (2008, 2013, 2015, 2018, and 2022), but have yet to win the championship. Notably, they played Gujarat Titans in the finals last year and were unable to hold their nerves against Hardik Pandya and company.

1. Punjab Kings (2 playoffs in 16 seasons)

Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings (previously Kings XI Punjab) had an interesting Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The team has been a part of every season since the league’s start in 2008. They advanced to the playoffs in 2008 and 2014 but did not move any further.

The Punjab Kings won 91 matches and lost 103, for a win percentage of 47. Despite their regular participation, the squad was unable to secure the IPL crown, falling short of ultimate triumph. However, they continue to be a competitive team with a devoted fan base, pushing for success in future seasons.
