Top 3 team scores at the Adelaide Oval in Test cricket

Adelaide Oval is one of the best cricket venues in the world. It is also one of the oldest international venues in the world. The second Test between India and Australia in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 is set to take place at the venue. It will be a Day/Night Test played with the pink Kookaburra ball. There is a lot of excitement for the match.

The Adelaide Oval has hosted the most number of pink-ball Test matches. It also holds some other records. Unlike other venues in the world, Adelaide Oval hasn’t witnessed mammoth team totals. In fact, the highest team total registered by a team at the venue is not even more than 700. There are only 5 instances where teams scored 600 or more runs in an innings at the venue.

Here are the Top 3 team scores at the Adelaide Oval in Tests.

1. 620/5d by England against Australia in 2010

In 2010, England arguably had its best team in over 20 years. They made the most of it by winning an away Ashes for the first time since 1986. The key reason for their success was out-batting the home side. One of the best displays of it happened at the Adelaide Oval. Australia batted first and managed to score only 245 runs. James Anderson starred with the ball by claiming 4 wickets.

In reply to it, the visiting side posted a huge total of 620/5 before declaring their innings. To date, it’s the third-highest team total at the venue. Alastair Cook and Kevin Pietersen starred with the bat by scoring 148(269) and 227(308) respectively. It was a huge dent in the home side’s confidence. They were reduced to 304 in the second innings as England won the Test by an innings and 71 runs.

2. 624 by Pakistan against Australia in 1983

Pakistan toured Australia for a Test series in 1983. The third Test of the series took place at the Adelaide Oval. A flat wicket meant that the match ended in a draw. In the only innings they played, Pakistan posted 624 runs on the board. It is the second-highest team total at the venue to date. Australia batted first and scored 465 runs on the back of Allan Border’s 117.

In reply to it, Pakistani batters ground hard for 191.2 overs and scored 624 runs. Three batters scored a hundred for the visiting side. Mohsin Khan, Qasim Umar, and Javed Miandad scored 149, 113, and 131 respectively. Australia in their second innings scored 310/7. The bowlers had a tough time in the Test and both the sides shook hands eventually to salvage a draw.

3. 674 by Australia against India in 1948

India toured Australia for a cricket series for the first time in 1948. It was not an experienced side. There was a big challenge for the visiting side to take on Don Bradman’s invincibles. The fourth Test of the series was at the Adelaide Oval. Australia batted first and posted a huge total of 674 runs on the board. Three of their batters smashed hundreds.

Don Bradman starred with the bat by scoring 201(296). Sid Barnes scored 112(281) and battled the tough conditions early. Lindsay Bassett scored an unbeaten 198*(305). In reply, India scored 381 and 277 respectively. For India, Vijay Hazare shined with the bat by scoring 116 and 145 respectively in both innings. Australia won the Test by an innings and 16 runs.
