Shimron Hetmyer is one of the most promising young batters in world cricket and on several occasions, he has shown his destructive class. In the middle order, he is a great prospect to have and it becomes really difficult for the opposition to stop him when he is in full flow. In this article, we will take a look at Shimron Hetmyer’s top 3 T20I innings.
81* vs Sri Lanka, 2021
Hetmyer’s best performance in T20 internationals came against Sri Lanka in a group-stage encounter in the 2021 T20 World Cup in Abu Dhabi. The West Indies were chasing a challenging target of 190 runs set by Sri Lanka courtesy of a half-century from Charith Asalanka. West Indies’ start in the run chase was shaky as they lost three wickets including the dismissals of Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis.
The left-handed batter built a partnership with Nicholas Pooran to keep West Indies in the contest but Pooran’s stay was cut short quickly. Hetmyer continued to hold the fort but there was not much assistance from any other batter which resulted in a loss for West Indies. Hetmyer ended up with an unbeaten 81 run-knock but could not guide his team to victory.
61 vs Australia, 2021
Another half-century from Hetmyer but this time in a winning cause against a formidable Australia. Aaron Finch won the toss for Australia and opted to invite West Indies to bat first. Once again it was a disappointing start for West Indies as they lost a couple of wickets in the powerplay. But in the middle order, Shimron Hetmyer rescued the team along with Dwayne Bravo. Hetmyer made 61 runs and his half-century played a crucial role in leading West Indies to 196 runs in the first innings. Eventually, West Indies won the match by 56 runs and Hetmyer was adjudged the player of the match for his batting display.
61 vs India, 2023
The left-hander played this knock earlier this year against India at Lauderhill. The Indian bowlers gave initial blows to the West Indies by picking up 4 wickets in quick succession. When Hetmyer walked into bat his team was down to 4/57 and from there he stitched a significant 49-run partnership with Shai Hope. After Hope’s departure, Hetmyer continued his onslaught and ensured that West Indies posted a fighting total on the board for India to chase.
