The home team beat the New Zealand side by 3 wickets to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series with one game left to be played on Tuesday which is to be played at the Pallekele stadium. 

New Zealand batted first and scored 209 before being bowled out. Mark Chapman’s 76 was the best score by the visiting team while Mitch Hay contributed with 49. In reply, Sri Lanka won with 3 wickets to spare and one over left to play. 

Skipper Charith Asalanka said at the end of the game “It has been a journey and this is another series. We have a big goal as a team but we are going through a good process. I misread the pitch a little bit, I thought Dew would play a part but didn’t happen that way”

On Sunday the right-arm spinner picked 3 wickets for 31 runs from his 9.1 overs. His first wicket of the day was Henry Nicholls who was out for 8 runs. The second wicket was that of Mitch Hay who was caught by Kusal Mendis for 49. The final wicket was that of Ish Sodhi who was stumped by Mendis for 9 to cap off an amazing day with the ball;.

Veteran leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay has continued his sublime form with the ball as he picked 3/ 46 from his 10 overs. The 34-year-old who picked 6/33 against India just a few months ago yet again had the Kiwis in a spin. Vandersay began with the key scalp of Will Young for 26. This was followed by the wickets of skipper Mitchell Santner for 6 and Nathan Smith for a golden duck.

Sri Lankan wicket keeper and batter Kusal Mendis led the chase with 74 off 102 balls as he stayed not out. There was a little cause for concern when Mendis seemed to be injured but recovered to help his side win the game. His knock consisted of six hits to the fence and he was given the man of the match award for his knock as well.
