Top 3 spells of Mitchell Starc in ODI World Cup

The difference between a good player and a great player is the ability to perform on big occasions. There are very few players who actually have the belief to deliver when they must. One such player is Mitchell Starc who has been the man for big occasions for the Kangaroos. The left-arm pacer was the leading wicket-taker in consecutive ODI World Cups in 2015 and 2019. In this article, we will take a look at his top 3 spells in the ODI World Cup.

Mitchell Starc’s best ODI World Cup performance came in the 2015 World Cup. The hosts, Australia and New Zealand faced off in a group stage encounter at Auckland. The trans-Tasman rivals produced a nail-biting thriller which was eventually won by the Blackcaps.

In the first innings, Australia could only manage to score 151 runs but the match was not yet over. In the second innings, Mitchell Starc picked up 6 wickets and almost finished the match for Australia. Kangaroos could not win the match but Starc’s bowling effort made this match a classic forever.

2. 5/26 vs New Zealand, 2019

Here is another memorable bowling spell against the neighbours for Mitchell Starc. Australia and New Zealand once again faced each other in the World Cup and it was Starc who stole the show but this time in a winning cause unlike 2015. Australia batted first and posted 243 runs on the board which was not a massive total. However, Starc turned it into an impossible target for New Zealand with his 5-wicket haul. In the end, Australia won the match convincingly by 86 runs.

3. 5/46 vs West Indies, 2019

Mitchell Starc set the tone in the 2019 World Cup for Australia with this 5-fer against West Indies in the early stage of the tournament. The defending champions were defending 289 runs in the second innings and needed impressive bowling spells to restrict the destructive West Indies batting unit.

Starc delivered the much-needed performance to break partnerships that were taking shape in the middle overs. Courtesy of his bowling effort Australia could defend the target and bag valuable points in the tournament.
