The much-awaited ODI World Cup 2023 is all set to kick off on October 5 which will be hosted by India. 8 teams have already qualified for the grand event while 2 teams are yet to be decided which will be announced after the conclusion of the ODI World Cup 2023 qualifiers.
However, talking about New Zealand, despite being one of the most prominent sides in the limited overs format, the Black Caps have never won an ODI World Cup. They always had a star-studded batting lineup, however, there were many instances where luck didn’t favor them. On that note, we will take a look at the 3 top scorers for New Zealand in the ODI World Cup.
Former New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming played 33 matches in the ODI World Cups and scored 1 075 runs at an average of 35.83. He smashed 5 fifties and 2 centuries while his highest score is 134* which came against South Africa during the 2003 edition. Fleming garnered a lot of fame after coaching Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League.
2. Ross Taylor
Former New Zealand middle-order batter Ross Taylor is one of the most stylish batters in the history of the limited overs format. Taylor played 30 innings in the ODI World Cups and scored 1002 runs at a decent average of 37.11. He has 6 half-centuries and 1 century in the mega event while his best figure which is 131* came against Pakistan during the 2011 edition in Sri Lanka.
New Zealand’s sensational opening batter Martin Guptill has been one of the most consistent batters for the Blackcaps in the limited-overs game. Guptill has appeared in 3 World Cups and played 27 matches in the grand event. He scored 995 runs at a brilliant average of 43.26 which included 4 half-centuries and 2 centuries. However, he also has a double hundred in the tournament which came against West Indies in the 2015 edition. The right-hander is currently not in the scheme of New Zealand selectors, however, it’d be interesting to see if he gets a chance.
