India and Australia will be squaring off in a T20 Series as both teams start their preparations for the T20 World Cup in 2024. This will be a 5-match series and the first match will be played at Visakhapatnam. All eyes will be on Indian youngsters, especially the bowlers, as to how they can grab the opportunity in the absence of senior members. Before this series let’s take a look at the top 3 performances by Indian bowlers against India in T20Is.
1. R. Ashwin – 4/11 in 2014
The veteran off-spinner delivered this spell on the biggest stage of T20 Cricket, the T20 World Cup. Ashwin took 4 wickets against Australia in the group-stage match of the 2014 T20 World Cup at Mirpur. India batted first and scored 159 runs, giving Australia a tricky target to chase.
Ashwin picked up key wickets dismissing some of the most important batters in the Australian batting unit. In the powerplay, he got the opener Aaron Finch out. After powerplay ended he dismissed another opener, David Warner. Team India’s next wicket was dangerous-looking Glenn Maxwell who was sent back by R. Ashwin. Ashwin’s last wicket was Muirhead and with his dismissal, he closed the Australian run chase.
2. Krunal Pandya – 4/36 in 2018
All-rounder Krunal Pandya comes second on this list. In the 3rd match of the 2018 series, he picked up 4 wickets and led India to a victory by 6 wickets. Pandya’s bowling performance helped India restrict Australia to 164/6 in the first innings.
His first wicket was D’Arcy Short who was looking solid and built an impressive partnership with Aaron Finch for the first wicket. On the very next delivery, he got the wicket of Ben McDermott to wrest the momentum in the match. The left-arm orthodox dismissed Glenn Maxwell as well. Later in the innings, he got the better of Alex Carey. In the second innings, India chased down the total comfortably.
3. Jasprit Bumrah – 3/16 in 2019
This spell was delivered by Jasprit Bumrah in the first match of the series between India and Australia in 2019. The Indian team, batting first, could only manage to score 126 runs. The bowlers had a difficult task of defending such a low total. It needed an exceptional performance from the bowling unit to stop Australia. Jasprit Bumrah once again stepped up for the Men in Blue and dismissed Aaron Finch and Peter Handscomb. He also got the wicket of Nathan Coulter-Nile but it was too late. India bowled really well but Australia managed to chase the total with 3 wickets in hand.
