Top 3 bowling performances of Shaun Pollock in ODIs

There have been plenty of South African legends that we remember to this day, whether it is Jacques Kallis or Allan Donald. There was an era where the Rainbow Nation was one of the most dominant teams in cricket and there was almost no match for them in either form of cricket. This was one of the most balanced and dangerous sides we had ever come across in the 90s and early 2000s.

There was one player who is regarded as one of the greatest all-rounders of the game and he was none other than former South African skipper Shaun Pollock. With over 800 wickets and 7000 runs in international cricket, there is no doubt that he was a legendary cricketer who has given some great performances for his team as a player and a skipper.

So, here are the top 3 bowling performances of Shaun Pollock in ODI’s:

3. 5/23 vs Pakistan in 2007

vs Pakistan in 2007

This was Shaun Pollock in the last phase of his career and he was still one of the senior bowlers backed by Graeme Smith. Pollock had given one of his best performances in this series and saved his best performance in the last game of the series against Pakistan. The Pakistan batters had no answer to Pollock’s great display of seam bowling and he went on to bowl a brilliant spell of 5/23 which decimated the Pakistan batting lineup who were bowled out for 153. This showed that Pollock was still a lethal pacer in his last days.

2. 5/20 vs England in 2000

vs England in 2000

This was the day Shaun Pollock had won South African hearts as the rainbow nation was facing England in the finals of the triangular series. The Proteas were all out for 149 in the first innings and it was a tough score to defend for any side in ODI’s, especially against a strong English team. However, it was Shaun Pollock who came to the rescue taking another great five-wicket haul which made sure England collapsed while chasing the modest total. Pollock ended with figures of 5/20 and he proved again why he is one of the reliable players for the Rainbow Nation.

1. 6/35 vs West Indies in 1999

vs West Indies in 1999

The West Indies were still a strong side in the 90’s and this was still going to be a tough match for South Africa. The Proteas went on to lose this match again, but this was still a match where we saw another great performance from Pollock. With Chanderpaul and Carl Hooper dominating the bowlers, it was the Port Elizabeth boy who made sure that they were restricted under 300 by bowling one of his greatest spells. Pollock went on to take 6 wickets for just 35 runs in his 10 overs. This was the only highlight for the Proteas in this entire game.
