Top 3 bowling performances of Bishan Singh Bedi in Tests 

Bishan Bedi was hailed as one of the best left-arm spinners to have played cricket. The former Indian skipper was part of the famed Indian quartet that had left many distinguished batters clueless. Born on the 25th of September 1946, Bishan Singh Bedi went on to play 67 Test matches for India and picked 266 wickets. 

The left-arm spinner also had 14 fifers and one ten-wicket haul in the game. The Indian legend also played 10 ODI matches and picked 7 wickets. In the first class level. Bedi played 370 games and picked 1560 wickets with a best of 7/5 which was one of his 106 fifers. 

Former India batting star Sunil Gavaskar paid rich tributes to Bishan Bedi after the latter passed away in October 2023 at the age of 77. Gavaskar had called the former the greatest ever spinner ever. Even former Australian skipper Ian Chappell regarded Bedi as the best left-arm spinner he has seen.

3- 6/127 vs New Zealand -Christchurch -1968

In the 2nd Test between New Zealand and India in Christchurch the home team coasted to an easy 6 wicket win. 22-year-old Bishan Singh Bedi stole the headlines for his amazing bowling as he picked 6/127 with the ball in the first innings after bowling nearly 50 overs. 

The Kiwis batted first and scored 502 as Graham Dowling scored 239. The wickets for Bedi that day included Bevan Congdon, Victor Pollard, Keith Thomson, Gary Bartlett, Richard Motz, and Jack Alabaster. The Indians were bowled out for 288 in the first innings before being bowled out for 301 in their 2nd innings. 

2- 6/71 vs England – Chennai -1977

Despite being towards the end of his career, Bishan Singh Bedi didn’t lose his ability to outwit the best batters. During the 4th Test vs England in Chennai, the left-arm spinner’s 6/71 helped his side win the match by 140 runs. India batted first and scored 253 with Bob Willis taking 6/53 as Surinder Amarnath and Syed Kirmani scored fifties. England replied with 195 as Dennis Amiss top scored with 82 as Bhagwath Chandrasekhar picked 6 wickets. Armed with a lead of 58 runs, the Indian side were bowled out for 259 with fifties from Gundappa Viswanath and Sunil Gavaskar. Needing 318 to win, England were all out for 177 as Bedi dismissed Mike Brearley, Derrick Randall, Tony Greig, John Lever, Derek Underwood, and Bob Willis. 

1- 7/98 vs Australia – Eden Gardens -1969 

The best ever bowling figures for Bishan Singh Bedi was 7/98 in the ten-wicket loss to Australia in Kolkata. India batted first and were bowled out for 212. In reply, the Aussies scored 335 as Bedi bowled 50 overs. His wickets included skipper Bill Lawry for 35, along with Ian Chappell, Doug Walter, Ian Redpath, Eric Freeman, Brian Taber, and Brian Mackenzie. Team India were all out for 161 in the 2nd dig as Eric Freeman and Alan Connolly picked 4 wickets each. Needing 39 runs to win, the Australians won by 10 wickets scoring the needed runs in just 5 overs.
