Top 3 batting performances of Shivnarine Chanderpaul in Tests

Shivnarine Chanderpaul was one of the most talented yet unsung heroes of West Indies cricket. Known for his awkward batting stance, the left-handed batter was a major force in the West Indies batting line-up after legendary Brain Lara’s retirement. Chanderpaul made his international debut in 1994 and represented the Caribbean team in all three formats.

The Guyanese cricketer is the ninth-highest run-scorer in Test cricket with 11867 runs from 164 matches. He racked up this mammoth number on the back of 30 centuries, two double hundreds and 66 half-centuries, at an average of 51.37. As the legendary Windies cricketer celebrates his 50th birthday, let’s take a look at his top three batting performances in Tests.

Here are Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s top 3 batting performances in Tests

3. 104 vs Australia, Antigua, 2003

One of Chanderpaul’s best Test knocks came in the fourth Test of the 2003 series against Australia. Batting first, Australia scored 240 and West Indies replied with the exact same figure in their first innings. The visitors added 417 more runs to their tally and set a massive target of 418 runs. Windies had a poor start to their innings, but centuries from Ramnaresh Sarwan and Chanderpaul gave them an incredible three-wicket victory.

2. 116 vs England, Manchester, 2007

West Indies could score only 229 in reply to England’s 370 in the first innings of the third Test of the 2007 series. Alastair Cook’s century helped the hosts add 313 more runs to their account and set a mammoth 455-run target for the Windies. Chanderpaul fought single-handedly with an unbeaten 116 but lacked support from the other end and eventually his team lost by 60 runs.

1. 137 vs India, Bridgetown, 1997

Another lone fight from Chanderpaul, but this time his efforts did not go in vain. India invited West Indies to bat first in the third Test of the 1997 series. On the back of Chanderpaul’s unbeaten 137, the hosts posted 298 on the board. The Men in Blue replied with 319 and the Windies batters struggled in the second innings. They were bundled out for just 140 and set a paltry target of 120. However, India were bowled out for 81 runs after a remarkable bowling display by the West Indies.
