Cricket commentator and former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar is celebrating his 59th birthday on Friday, July 12. A right-handed middle-order batter, Manjrekar has played 111 international matches and has scored over 4000 runs.
He made his Test debut in 1987 against the West Indies. Son of former India cricketer Vijay Manjrekar did not have a great start to his international career. However, he enjoyed a great time in the 1989–90 season, especially during the tours of West Indies and Pakistan.
Manjrekar has played 37 Test matches and has scored 2043 runs at an average of 36.48. He has four centuries, one double hundred and five fifties to his credit in red-ball cricket. On his special day, let’s take a look at his top three batting performances in Tests.
Here are Sanjay Manjrekar’s top three batting performances in Tests:
3. 108 vs WI, Bridgetowm, 1989
In the 1989 India tour of the West Indies, Sanjay Manjrekar scored a brilliant century in the second Test at Bridgetown. The Indian batters struggled against the Caribbean pace attack that consisted of Malcolm Marshall, Curtly Ambrose, Ian Bishop and Courtney Walsh. But Manjrekar played a befitting knock (108 off 221) to help India post 321 in the first innings. However, India lost the game by eight wickets as the hosts comfortably chased down a target of 196.
2. 113* vs Pak, Karachi, 1989
In the 1989 tour of India, the hosts set a mammoth target of 453 runs for the visitors in the series opener in Karachi. The Indian batters struggled in the first innings against the pace trio of Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Imran Khan. Pakistan looked favourites to win the match but Manjrekar’s unbeaten century (113* off 243) and Navjot Sidhu’s 85 off 155 ended the match in a draw.
1. 218 vs Pak, Lahore, 1989
Manjrekar registered his only double hundred in the third Test of the same tour against Pakistan in 1989. On the back of his 218 off 401 balls, India posted a massive first innings total of 509 before being bowled out. However, Pakistan, in reply, slammed 699/5 after centuries from Aamer Malik, and Javed Miandad and a double hundred from Shoaib Mohammad. The match eventually ended in a draw.
