Top 3 batting performances of Eddie Barlow in Tests

There have been plenty of great cricketers in South Africa since the 90s which was the time when they came into relevance. However, there were still some great cricketers in the set-up during the 60’s and 70’s in the Rainbow Nation. Some of these cricketers might not be remembered as much as the legends which we know now, but have made a great contribution to the game as well.

One of the players we will be talking about is South African all-rounder Edgar John Barlow also known as Eddie Barlow who was one of the top players for the South African nation. Eddie Barlow came into international cricket with a tremendous first-class and list-A career and took that form to international cricket as well. With over 2500 in 30 matches along with 40 wickets, it has been a great career for him. We will be talking about some of his best performances with the bat in test cricket which makes him an important figure in the game.

So, here are the top 3 best batting performances of Eddie Barlow in Test cricket:

3. 127 vs Australia in 1970

127 vs Australia in 1970

This was one of the last few years of Barlow in international cricket and the South Africans were up against a strong Australian side. While most of the South African batters got some quick starts but failed to convert their big scores, Barlow went on to score a wonderful 127 to take his team to a respectable total. This was enough to keep the Aussies on the back foot and result in South Africa winning the game by a margin of 170 runs in the end.

2. 138 vs England in 1965

138 vs England in 1965

This was when Eddie Barlow was in the form of his life and this time it was the mighty England team against whom he was up. The talented allrounder scored another magnificent hundred to make sure he built a great 2nd wicket partnership with Tom Pithey to take his side to a 500+ total. The English still put up a fight in this match despite the great performance from Barlow in both innings and ended the game in a draw, but this was still a huge example of what a great cricketer Barlow was for South Africa.

1. 201 vs Australia in 1964

201 vs Australia in 1964

This was perhaps one of the best performances from Eddie Barlow we have seen as he went on to score a double hundred. The Aussie batters were restricted to just 345 and Barlow made life hell for the Aussie bowling attack scoring 201 runs while opening the batting. This was also on the Australian home turf and this was another great victory for the Proteas as they won by 10 wickets. This innings from Barlow set the stage on fire and helped his team to get a big win.
