Bill Brown was a superb opening batsman and fielder for Australia both before and during World War II, though his performances may have been eclipsed by those of his more celebrated contemporaries. He fought as a flight lieutenant in the Pacific with the Royal Australian Air Force during the war. He was no longer the dominant player he once was, and he had missed out on some of his best productive years in cricket.
He averaged over 47 in Tests and more than 50 in first-class cricket, including 39 hundreds. Without the war, he would surely have played more Test cricket. Despite his unimpressive bat, he was an excellent glance and ball placer. He possessed a wide variety of shots, though, and was difficult to pin down.
