Throwback to Sunil Gavaskar becoming the first batter to hit a century in each innings of a Test match three times 

Former Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar was one of the earliest great batters to put the national side on the map. Ever since scoring 774 runs in his debut series against West Indies, Sunil Gavaskar became the best batter that India put out against the world. By the time he ended his career, Gavaskar had become the first man in the history of Test cricket to breach the 10,000 run mark in the longest format of the game. 

Sunil Gavaskar also holds the record to be the first ever batsman in Test cricket to score centuries in each innings thrice. Not many batters have gone on to achieve such lofty feats especially at a time when the batters wore no helmets. What made the feat more special was the former India star batted against some of the top fast bowlers of his era. 

Legendary batter achieves legendary feat

It was during the third Test versus West indies in Kolkata that Sunil Gavaskar became the first batter to score a century in each innings thrice. India batted first and scored 300 from 104 overs before getting bowled out. Mr. Gavaskar was the best batter with 107 runs while Kapil Dev was the next best scorer with 61 runs. 

West Indies scored 327 in their 1st essay before being bowled out with a lead of 27 runs. Basil William’ 111 was the best score for the visitors while Alvin Kallicharan scored 55 runs. S Venkataraghavan was the best bowler for India with 4/55 from 33 overs while Kapil Dev picked 2/88 from his 20.4 overs. 

In the 2nd innings, India scored 361/1 from 93 overs before declaring their innings. Sunil Gavaskar scored 182 not out along with Dilip Vengsarkar who was not out on 157. The pair added an unbeaten 344 runs for the second wicket as they set the visitors a target of 335 runs to win. 

West Indies nearly lost the game only for Sew Shivnarine and Sylvester Clarke to bat out a draw in thrilling fashion. West Indies were 197/9 when play was called off as Karsan Ghavri picked 4 wickets and Venkataraghavan picked 3 wickets.
