Hardik Pandya’s barren luck as the skipper of Mumbai Indians continued as the five-time champions lost to Lucknow Super Giants on Friday. Mumbai lost the game by 12 runs to suffer their third loss of the season to be pushed seventh in the table. As the MI skipper Pandya has led in 17 games winning just five and losing on 12 occasions. The pressure is already mounting on MI and Pandya in particular ahead of the game at home against RCB on Monday.
Mumbai Indians restricted LSG to 203 runs for the loss of eight wickets with Pandya taking a fifer. During the chase, Naman Dhir and Suryakumar Yadav batted well to keep the team within a chance. Once Yadav fell in the last few overs of the game, Hardik Pandya tried his best to help his team over the line. Avesh Khan kept his cool in the final overs of the game to dent Mumbai’s hopes for a win.
Here are the reasons behind MI’s loss to LSG
3- Lack of bite with the new ball
Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar were meant to end MI’s struggles with the new ball. Both bowlers with Boult in particular being known for his wicket-taking skills with the new ball. If it hadn’t been for the first over miss where MI fielders failed to hear the edge of Marsh’s bat, things could have been different. Chahar on the other hand hasn’t been able to get back to his best form with the ball since his move to MI. The pair bowled five overs amongst themselves and picked just a single wicket. Ashwani Kumar who had a terrific debut was hit for 39 runs from his three overs.
2- No spin support
Mitchell Santner was disappointed with the ball once again as the Kiwi Test captain bowled four overs for 46 runs and didn’t pick a single wicket. Vignesh Puthur managed to claim the key scalp of Marsh but the left-arm spinner was hit for 31 runs from his four overs. MI could have used someone like Karn Sharma or Mujeeb Ur Rahman but the decision to stick with a Santner proved to be a costly choice with the Kiwi struggling to find his best form.
1- Yet another batting failure
It seemed like the MI batters were finally back to their best during the win over KKR at home on Monday. All the good work went to waste as Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks failed to do well with the bat at the top of the order. The duo are known for their amazing attacking batting talents, but that failed to come to the fore. Tilak Varma struggled with the bat and scored 25 off 23 balls with two hits to the fence before being retired from the game. Varma who has been a consistent run-getter for MI has failed to do well so far with the bat this season.
