The England cricket board has announced Harry Brook as the new captain for the ODI and T20I format. Brook will replace Jos Buttler who stepped down after the first-round exit in Champions Trophy 2025. Brendon McCullum and England will have their eyes set on the next ICC event which is the T20 World Cup set to be played in India and Sri Lanka at the start of 2026.
Brook was recently in the news for being banned by BCCI for pulling out of the IPL 2025 season. The 26-year-old decided on the move to give priority to his national side. Releasing a statement to the media after getting appointed as the captain, Brook said “It’s a real honour to be named England’s white-ball captain. Ever since I was a kid playing cricket at Burley in Wharfedale, I dreamed of representing Yorkshire, playing for England, and maybe one day leading the team. To now be given that chance means a great deal to me,”
The statement also read “I want to thank my family and coaches who’ve supported me every step of the way. Their belief in me has made all the difference and I wouldn’t be in this position without them. There’s so much talent in this country, and I’m looking forward to getting started, moving us forward, and working towards winning series, World Cups and major events,”
Here are the 3 reasons why Harry Brook as a white-ball skipper is a great move
3. One of the best upcoming talents
Harry Brook has made a great start to his international career and was ranked the number 1 Test batter recently. Brook has also played 26 ODI games and 44 T20I matches for his national side. The 26-year-old led England in five ODI matches, winning two games and losing three games. This was when Jos Buttler was injured during a home series but there was enough evidence that Brook is not only a leading talent with a bat but can also be a good leader in the future.
2. Can play ‘modern day’ cricket
England had become a huge white-ball side under the captaincy of Eoin Morgan and won the 2019 World Cup. Jos Buttler led the side to 2022 T20 World Cup win which was followed by first round exits in 2023 ODI World Cup, 2025 Champions Trophy and a semi-finals loss in the T20 World Cup. Brook can revitalize the side with his ability to play the modern brand of cricket which is based on aggression and taking the attack to the opposition.
1. Can form a good partnership with Brendon McCullum
Brendon McCullum and Jos Buttler’s partnership as the captain and coach didn’t bear the fruits that the ECB would have hoped for. Their only win was in the T20 series in India which the hosts won 4-1 and followed by a 3-0 ODI series whitewash. In the Champions Trophy England lost all their matches to be placed last in the group. Brook and McCullum could repeat the Bayliss and Morgan partnership and make England a great white-ball side again. Both are aggressive by nature and could make a team that could potentially dominate the cricketing landscape for years to come.
