Three Indian bowlers who could replace Ravichandran Ashwin in Tests

Ravichandran Ashwin is one of the finest off-spinner that the world has ever seen along with the likes of Muttiah Muralitharan, Nathan Lyon, and Harbhajan Singh. With ability to bowl in almost all conditions and picking up crucial wickets in Test matches as well as his ability with bat to help his team bail out from tough situations certainly makes Ashwin one of the best in the business. Often appreciated for his presence of mind and deep understanding of the game, it is certainly an advantage for the Indian Cricket team to have a player like Ashwin in their ranks.

Currently, the number 1 ranked Test bowler has played 92 Tests for India in which the 36-year-old off-spinner had managed to pick up 474 wickets and he even went on to score 3129 runs so far.  So, replacing such a legend will be a tough task for the Team management. However, here few possible replacements that can be considered for the place;

Washington Sundar

Washington Sundar will certainly be a like-for-like replacement for someone like Ashwin. Similarly, like Ashwin from Tamil Nadu, Sundar also went from being a batsman as a youngster to renouncing himself as an off-spinner. Subsequently representing India at the 2016 Under-19 World Cup, he replaced Ashwin at Rising Pune Supergiant in the 2017 IPL and bowled at an impressive economy rate to help his side to the final.

Shahbaz Ahmed

Another batter can be handy with the bat as well as be lethal with the ball given the condition that is presented. Shahbaz is a young all-rounder who has certainly impressed many with his batting as well as bowling capability. The 28-year-old Bengal cricketer has to date played 27 matches scoring 1538 runs with a healthy average of 43.94 and during the course, he has also picked 82 wickets.

Jalaj Saxena

A veteran in the domestic circuit, Jalaj Saxena is known largely for his batting as well as bowling capabilities. He was also the leading wicket-taker in the Ranji Trophy 2022-23 playing for Kerala. The 36-year-old all-rounder has played 133 matches in the first-class arena where he went on to score 6567 runs and also took 410 wickets in the process. He is certainly the major player who has been overlooked for the national side.
