Three Bowlers with the most wickets in a single Ashes match

The Ashes series has over the years have transpired to treat the fans with some thrilling matches as well as great performances which have only added to the glory of this series. Right from the very beginning inaugural edition has attracted fans from all around the globe. One of the major reasons that two powerhouses of the cricketing world compete against each for this prestigious trophy.

Over the years there have many memorable moments as well as match-winning performances that have certainly made it into the records books and have also been engraved into the minds of the fans. Similarly, here is one such interesting statistic for the bowlers who have taken the most number of wickets in a single match of Ashes;

1. Jim Laker (19 wickets)

Jim Laker will always be remembered for this epic feat which he achieved in an Ashes Test at Old Trafford in 1956 where Laker recorded the record feat in which the former England cricketer took 19 wickets in one Test match. In the Test match, Jim recorded a figure of 9/37 in the first innings followed by a record 10/53 in the second innings of that Test match.

2. Bob Massie (16 wickets)

A fast-medium swing bowler, Bob Massie will always be remembered as the player who took the cricketing world by storm in his debut match. It was at the Lord’s in 1972 where the England batting lineup was demolished by Massie who swung the ball claiming eight wickets each in both the innings of the Test. Eventually ending up with a figure of 16/137 in the match and which also saw him surpass the record of best figure in a debut match which was previously held by Narendra Hirwani.

3. Hedley Verity (15 wickets)

Hedley Verity had a short career making his debut in the year 1931 and last playing in the year 1939. Verity died of wounds as a prisoner of war in Italy on July 31, 1943, some two months after his thirty-eight birthday. It was in an Ashes game where Verity troubled the Australian batter with his Slow Left arm Orthodox spin bowling as the former England bowler went on to take fifteen wickets in that Test match.

4. Wilfred Rhodes (15 wickets)

One of the longest international careers which one can recall, Wilfred Rhodes played international cricket for 31 years. Rhodes was a Yorkshire cricketer at the time and the county had a great dominance in the domestic circuit. For Yorkshire, he scored more than 30,000 runs and was also more than handy with the ball. In an Ashes match, Rhodes took 15 wickets in a single match is the record third-highest number of wickets in any Ashes Test.
