Star cricketer-turned-commentator Ian Bishop was born today in 1967

Former West Indian cricketer and veteran commentator, Ian Bishop, is celebrating his 56th birthday today. Bishop had a small but impactful career for West Indies but his contributions with the mic have been even more significant to the world of Cricket. His immaculate understanding of the game and unbiased analysis has been the hallmark of his commentary career. Let’s revisit a stalwart career of an unmatched cricketing intellect.

His Cricket Caravan

Bishop got to wear the Caribbean colors for the first time in 1988 when he played for the West Indies against England. In the longest format, he made his debut against India in 1989. He did not look back once he got his opportunity in international cricket. Bishop was a tall, lanky, and courageous bowler who impressed everyone with his skill in the global arena. 

Injury Scars

Severe back injuries obstructed his path. A career that could have been illustrious was cut short because of injuries. Bishop retired at the age of 30 but not without making a valuable contribution to West Indian Cricket. He played 43 test matches for his side and took 161 wickets at an impressive average of 24.27. His ODI career was as illustrious. In the white ball cricket, he picked up 118 wickets in 84 matches, once again at an impactful average of 26.50.

Ian Bishop has made a space for himself in cricket broadcasting. He is one of the most prominent voices in the world of cricket. The former cricketer has been outright in suggesting improvements to the game and how this gentleman’s game can be taken to new audiences globally. His insights have been vital for the game and it will continue to be.
