Because the batters consistently put on quick-fire batting displays, the Indian Premier League is the most exciting cricket league in the world. With a few exceptions, practically every game has outstanding performances by some of the top batters in the world.
In the tournament, it’s extremely uncommon to see a batter score at or below one run per ball. In the history of the IPL, only 9 batters have needed 50 or more deliveries to reach the fifty-run mark. Here, we examine the IPL’s five slowest half-centuries.
3. Brendon McCullum and Robin Uthappa (52 balls)
It may be hard to imagine Brendon McCullum reaching a fifty off 52 balls, but it did occur during the 2010 IPL season. Mumbai Indians gave Kolkata Knight Riders a 134-run target in 20 overs. The KKR top-order easily reached the target while only losing one wicket. Brendon McCullum, who played an out-of-character 57* from 56 deliveries, was the show’s star despite Sourav Ganguly and David Hussey’s 42 and 20*scores, respectively.
After entering into the game for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in a difficult position, Robin Uthappa scored a half-century off 52 balls during the 2012 season. When the scoreboard showed 1/2, Robbie entered the game at number 4. He played through the entire innings, finishing with an undefeated 60 off 58 balls. Despite his best efforts, Robin could only increase RCB’s score to 146. The batting line-up for Delhi Daredevils successfully surpassed the 147-run mark set by RCB with 4 overs remaining.
2. Parthiv Patel (53 balls)
Parthiv Patel scored a lethargic fifty in a 2010 league game between Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab. Parthiv had a quiet knock as the CSK opener, with 4 fours and 2 sixes. When he was dismissed in the 18th over, having made 57 runs off 58 deliveries, his strike rate was just 98. After 20 overs, CSK eventually scored 136/7. KXIP reached the same amount at the end of the game to tie it and advance to the Super Over. After that, KXIP won, and Parthiv received a lot of criticism for his abnormally sluggish knock.
1. JP Duminy (55 balls)
During the 2009 season, JP Duminy’s incredibly slow innings for Mumbai Indians denied his team a straightforward victory over Kings XI Punjab. Duminy struck 59 off 63 balls as MI failed to reach what appeared to be a winnable target in 20 overs while chasing a modest total of 120. During this innings, Duminy also set an unfavourable record for the slowest strike rate for a 50+ score in IPL history with a strike rate of 93.65.
