Shane Warne’s top 3 controversial moments on the cricket field

Shane Warner was one of the most colourful characters that cricket fans have ever witnessed. As a typical Australian he was expressive on the field but headlines followed him off the field as well. There have been several incidents where the spotlight has been on Shane Warne for non-cricketing reasons. In this article, we will take a look at his top 3 controversial moments on the cricket field.

1. Drugs take him out of the World Cup

The Australian team arrived on South African shores in 2003 with the hopes of defending their title. The leg spinner Shane Warne was arguably the most important name in the Kangaroo setup. But destiny had some other plans for Warne. Just before the 2003 World Cup Shane Warne failed the drugs test and he was found having banned substances. A 12-month ban was imposed on the Australian and sadly he never played ODI cricket for Australia again. Interestingly, the Aussies went on to win the World Cup.

2. Shane takes on Samuels

Shane Warne was a fierce competitor on the ground and he had an Australian temperament. However, he would never get involved in verbal exchanges with the opposition players but Marlon Samuels got the better of him in a Big Bash League match in 2013. In the Melbourne derby, Warne representing Stars had an ugly altercation with Samuels of Renegades. The West Indian also did not hold back and replied in the same fashion. Well, this confrontation proved to be expensive for Warne as he was banned for one match along with a hefty fine of $4500.

3. In the books of bookmakers

Match-fixing incidents were much more prevalent in the 90s and the bookmakers had close connections with cricketers. One such connection tainted the legacy of the legendary leg-spinner. Warner, along with Mark Waugh, was reprimanded for sharing crucial details about pitch and weather conditions with John, an Indian bookie. This incident was divulged in 1998 however it happened in 1994 on the Sri Lankan tour.
