Ross Taylor’s top 3 batting performances in T20Is

The former New Zealand captain, Ross Taylor, was a prominent figure in the Kiwi batting order across formats for more than a decade. Along with a glorious ODI and Test career he also had a decently successful stint in T20I cricket. Moving ahead our focus will be on some of his best T20I knocks for New Zealand.

1. 63 vs West Indies, 2008

New Zealand and West Indies played a 2-match T20I series in 2008. The first match of the series at Auckland was a nail-biter. Daniel Vettori won the toss for the hosts and elected to put runs on the board first. New Zealand suffered early blows with both the openers Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder back in the pavilion in the powerplay.

Then Ross Taylor stitched a vital partnership with Scott Styris to put a hold on the fall of wickets. Taylor continued to take on the opposition bowling attack even after Styris’ dismissal. In the end, his knock carried New Zealand to 155 runs in the first innings. The match eventually went to the super over in which West Indies came out on top.

2. 62* vs West Indies, 2012

Here is another explosive knock from Ross Taylor but this one in the capacity of a captain and on a much more important occasion. New Zealand faced West Indies in the group stage of the 2012 T20 World Cup. Winning the toss, New Zealand elected to field first and restricted West Indies to 139 runs.

The Blackcaps were not chasing a massive target in the second innings but the run chase became tricky as West Indies took three wickets in the first 10 overs with only 52 runs in New Zealand’s account. But Ross Taylor kept his wicket intact at one end. However, the lack of support from the other end resulted in a tied score at the end of the second innings, and eventually, West Indies won the match in the super over.

3. 62 vs Sri Lanka, 2007

Ross Taylor played this knock in the T20 World Cup only. In the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, New Zealand and Sri Lanka clashed in an important group-stage fixture. Taylor’s 62 runs made the job easier for New Zealand.

Even without enough support from the other end he carried his team to a fighting total of 164 runs in the first innings. Unfortunately, the target was chased quite comfortably by Sri Lanka in the second innings.
