With this victory, Punjab came closest to their dream of lifting the IPL title for the first time. In the second qualifier of the 2014 season, they came up against the juggernaut of Chennai Super Kings. Punjab Kings did what not many were expecting from them. The team, vying for their first final qualification, trounced Chennai Super Kings in a comprehensive fashion. In the first innings, Punjab Kings scored 226 runs, which was beyond Chennai’s reach despite Suresh Raina’s destructive innings.

Another thrilling victory against Chennai Super Kings, but this one came in the last season. Punjab challenged Chennai’s hegemony in their den by successfully chasing a mammoth target in the second innings. The first innings ended with Chennai’s impressive batting display as the former champions posted 200 runs on the board. It was a big test for Punjab’s batting unit, but the batters came out on top as they put on an outstanding performance. Punjab completed the run chase on the last ball of the match to add valuable points to the tally.

Now let’s travel to the inaugural season of IPL to revisit this nail-biter. Yuvraj Singh led the Punjab Kings to a memorable victory over Mumbai Indians by the barest of margins. Batting first, Punjab scored 189 runs, courtesy of half-centuries from Shaun Marsh and Luke Pomersbach. In the second innings, the star-studded Mumbai Indians’ batting order responded in a belligerent fashion. Sachin Tendulkar was the main anchor for his team with 65 runs in the second innings. However, Punjab Kings were not willing to cede the territory and held the fort strong to eventually win the match by just 1 run.
