After that, there was no turning back for Ashwin who eventually became the lead spinner in the fifty-over format.

He went on to play 116 ODI matches and picked 156 wickets with a best of 4/25. He also scored 707 runs with one half-century.

The last ODI game for Ashwin was against Australia at home in Chennai in the very first game of the ODI World Cup 2023 campaign. The veteran spinner bowled 10 overs and picked the only wicket of Cameron Green and wasn’t considered thereafter.
