England were on the tour of Pakistan for a three-match Test series in October 2024. The tourists were taking on Shan Masood’s men in the first Test under stand-in skipper Ollie Pope in Multan. The hosts’ skipper Masood won the toss and decided to bat first followed by his team posting a total of 556 runs in the first innings. 

Then came a historic and unforgettable batting display from England’s batters, especially the pair of Harry Brook and the modern-day batting great, Joe Root. Speaking of Brook, he played a swashbuckling knock of 317 runs off just 322 balls, hitting 29 fours and 3 sixes to dismantle Pakistan’s bowling attack. Besides that, he also stitched a historic partnership of 454 runs with Joe Root for the fourth wicket. On the back of Brook’s knock and his partnership with Root, England posted a mammoth total of 823 runs for the loss of 7 wickets before declaring the innings. 

Eventually, England won this game by a big margin of an innings and 47 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

In the same match of Harry Brook’s historic triple-century heroics, in which the cricketing world also witnessed the greatness of modern-day batting legend, Joe Root. The 34-year-old played an iconic knock of 262 runs off 375 balls, hitting 17 fours in England’s first innings. 

Root’s double-century, alongside Brook’s memorable outing, helped England push the hosts away from winning the match or even getting a ‘draw’ out of it. Root-Brook duo’s 454-run stand for the fourth wicket played a pivotal role in England’s ‘innings and 47-run win’ in the first Test of the three-match series.

Around the end of the calendar year of 2024 in December, Hashmatullah Shahidi-led Afghanistan tour Zimbabwe for an all-format assignment. After winning both the T20I and ODI series against the hosts, the emerging South Asian team took on Zimbabwe in the first Test of the two-match series in Bulawayo from December 26 to 30, 2024. 

Batting first after winning the toss, Zimbabwe posted their Test history’s highest score, posting a big total of 586 runs in the first innings. In response, Afghanistan came up with a historic reply, scoring their Test history’s highest total and one of the highest totals in the history of Test cricket. Skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi played a decisive role in this massive total scored by his side. 

Shahidi scored 246 runs off 474 balls, hitting 21 fours to smash his career’s first Test double-century. Besides that, he also registered a historic 364-run partnership with Rahmat Shah (234 runs) for the third wicket. Eventually, the game ended in a high-scoring draw.
