Ranking Aaqib Javed’s top 3 performances in ODI Cricket

Ranking Aaqib Javed's top 3 performances in ODI Cricket

Aaqib Javed, a name synonymous with swing and seam, was one of Pakistan’s most effective bowlers in the 1990s. While his career was often overshadowed by the brilliance of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis, Aaqib consistently delivered match-winning performances. In this article, we highlight his top three performances in One Day Internationals (ODIs) that defined his legacy as a formidable fast bowler.

1. 7/37 vs India – Sharjah, 25th October 1991

Arguably the pinnacle of Aaqib Javed’s ODI career, his 7/37 against arch-rivals India at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium remains one of his most memorable spells. On a wicket that offered some assistance to the seamers, Aaqib utilized his ability to swing the ball both ways, dismantling the Indian batting lineup.

His sharp inswingers and deceptive yorkers left the Indian batters bewildered, leading Pakistan to a comfortable victory. He dismissed the top seven out of eight Indian batters and helped Pakistan win the game by 72 runs.

2. 4/31 vs West Indies – Faisalabad, 24th November 1991

Just a month after his heroics against India, Aaqib Javed once again demonstrated his match-winning prowess, this time against the West Indies. Bowling first at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad, Aaqib’s 4/31 was instrumental in restricting the powerful West Indian batting lineup.

His ability to generate movement off the pitch, combined with his disciplined line and length, made scoring extremely difficult for the opposition. This performance is often remembered for the way Aaqib outclassed the West Indies’ top order, securing a crucial victory for Pakistan.

3. 5/19 vs India – Sharjah, 7th April 1995

Aaqib Javed’s affinity for Sharjah was once again on display in April 1995 when he ripped through the Indian batting lineup with figures of 5/19. On a pitch that offered little to the bowlers, Aaqib’s accuracy and swing made the difference.

His spell was marked by intelligent variations and an ability to exploit even the slightest weaknesses in the Indian batting order. This performance is particularly notable for the way Aaqib maintained pressure throughout his spell, never allowing the Indian batsmen to settle.
