Predicting Sri Lanka’s Playing XI for their 2nd ODI against West Indies

Read on as we will predict the Sri Lanka’s Playing XI for the upcoming 2nd ODI against West Indies. Sri Lanka won their 3rd successive ODI game at home this time they beat West Indies by five wickets on the Duckworth and Lewis method. In their previous ODI series, the home team had comprehensively beaten India with a 2-0 margin for the first time in 27 years. The 2nd game of the series is to be played on Wednesday at the Pallekele cricket stadium.

West Indian skipper Shai Hope speaking at the end of the game said, “We have to focus on what we can focus on, have to make sure we do well in the next game. The guys showed a bit of intent at the backend of the innings.”

Charith Asalanka seemed happy when he said, “It was a convincing win and we batted really well. First, my plan was to attack from the outset, played with a positive mindset. I think me and Nishan batted well. I think after more than 15 overs we got a chance with the wet ball, they couldn’t grip the ball properly and myself and Nishan did well.”

Here is the likely Sri Lanka’s Playing XI vs West Indies for 2nd ODI on Wednesday

Top order – Nishan Madushka and Avishka Fernando

Pathum Nissanka was ruled out of the series due to injury. In his place came Nishan Madushka who was given his ODI cap by coach Sanath Jayasuriya. The right-handed batter scored 69 runs in his debut innings from 54 balls with 7 fours and one six. Avishka Fernando has a lot of talent with the bat and the aggressive opener will look to come good on Wednesday after scoring just 5 runs on Sunday.

Middle Order – Kusal Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka

Wicketkeeper and batter Kusal Mendis has been in tremendous form in the Test and T20I formats. It is the ODI format where the right-handed batter hasn’t been able to score runs with consistency. Sadeera Samarawickrama is the other player who has been struggling to score runs in recent times. Skipper Charith Asalanka has been in great form and top scored with 77 and also picked one wicket with the ball.

Lower-order – Janith Liyange, Kamindu Mendis, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellage

Sri Lanka knows the kind of talent Janith Liyanage brings to the table with the bat and ball. The 29-year-old is a dangerous lower-order batter and can also bowl well when called upon. The star everyone is talking about is Kamindu Mendis who has set the cricketing world on fire with his latest performances. The left-handed batter scored an unbeaten 30 off 21 balls in the last game. Wanindu Hasaranga bowled six overs and picked 2/18 and showed he is back to his best. Dunith Wellage was his economical best with 0/20 from 7 overs to keep the West Indian batters in check on Sunday.

Tail enders – Jeffrey Vandersay and Asitha Fernando

Veteran leg spinner, Jeffrey Vandersay bowled 8.3 overs and picked 1/45 and that was off skipper Shai Hope for 5. Charith Asalanka will want his veteran spinner to continue in the same vein and help his side win the game and wrap up the series. There are concerns regarding the form of Asitha Fernando in the ODI format. The right-arm pacer bowled four overs and was smashed for 28 runs by the opposition without picking a wicket.

Sri Lanka’s Likely XI

Nishan Madushka, Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka (Captain), Janith Liyanage, Kamindu Mendis, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellage, Jeffrey Vandersay, and Asitha Fernando.
