OTD| West Indies suffered a massive batting collapse as they were bundled for 53 in a Test against Pakistan in 1986

On this day the formidable West Indian side was brought to their knees by a fierce Pakistan bowling lineup in Faisalabad. West Indies was on a long and testing tour of Pakistan where they played test and ODI series.

In the first match of the test series Pakistan absolutely nailed their opponents and handed a heavy defeat to the West Indies.

Poor Start for Pakistan

Skipper Imran Khan won the toss and elected to bat first but his side got off to a shaky start as Malcolm Marshall and Patrick Patterson wreaked havoc in their opening spell. Imran Khan managed to stabilize the innings somehow but Pakistan could not post a big total in the first innings. West Indies restricted Pakistan to a low score of 159 runs.

In reply, West Indies batted much better than Pakistan. The side from the Caribbean scored 248 runs courtesy of notable contributions from Desmond Haynes, Richie Richardson, and Viv Richards. Wasim Akram got 6 scalps to his name in the first innings.  West Indies eventually got a lead of 89 runs which gave them an edge over Pakistan.

Solid comeback from Pakistan

Pakistan managed to put their first-innings tragedy aside and make a resounding comeback in the second innings. They scored 328 runs in the second innings overcoming the lead that they had conceded in the first innings. Saleem Yousuf and Waseem Akram, who contributed with the ball as well, made half-centuries to help Pakistan post a challenging target of 240 for West Indies.

The match was still hanging in the balance but the Pakistan bowlers annihilated the West Indian batting lineup. All 10 wickets were shared by the veteran leggie Abdul Qadir and the skipper Imran Khan. Qadir picked up 6 wickets along with Khan, who had 4 wickets in his tally, forcing West Indies to surrender in the second innings. Pakistan bowled them out for just 53 runs which capped off a historic victory. Wasim Akram was adjudged man of the match for his contributions both with bat and ball.
