New Zealand toured Pakistan for a three-match Test series in October 1990. Javed Miandad-led side won the series 3-0 as Waqar Younis ran riot with the ball in hand. The right-arm pacer picked 29 wickets from the series to stamp his mark in world cricket for years to come.

With the bat, Shoaib Mohammad led the charge scoring 507 runs with an average of 169. For the visitors, Martin Crowe’s 244 and Ken Rutherford’s 187 runs in the series were the best with the bat. The highest wicket-takers for the Kiwis were Chris Pringle and Willie Watson with 11 wickets each.

It was a dismal tour for the Kiwis as they lost all three Test matches that were played in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi. In the subsequent ODI series, Pakistan won all three matches with ease to stake home a double whitewash.

Pakistan’s two Ws come to the fore with the ball in Karachi

New Zealand batted first after Javed Miandad won the toss and were bowled out for 196. The best batter for the visitors was Ken Rutherford with 79 off 141 balls while Mark Greatbatch scored 43. Wasim Akram bowled 29.5 overs and grabbed 4/44 while Waqar Younis bowled 22 overs and picked 4/40. Aaquib Javed and Ijaz Ahmed picked one wicket each as the two new ball bowlers ran riot.

In reply, the Pakistani side scored a massive 433/6 before declaring their innings. Ramiz Raja and Shoaib Mohammad added 172 for the first wicket before Raja was out for 68 from 201 balls. Shoaib Mohammad batted well to score an unbeaten 203 runs and his knock came off 411 balls with 23 fours as he batted for nearly 11 hours. Danny Morrison was the best bowler for the Kiwis with 2/86 from his 28.3 overs with the scalps of skipper Miandad for 27 and wicketkeeper Saleem Yousuf for 13.

Armed with a lead of 43 runs, Pakistani bowlers yet again had the Kiwi batters in trouble reducing them to 57/4 at one stage. Wasim Akram dismissed openers Trevor Frankin and David White while Aquib Javed dismissed Mark Greatbatch and Ken Rutherford.

Martin Crowe and Dipak Patel added 39 before the Kiwi spinner fell to Wasim Akram for 19. With this wicket, this was the first time both Wasim and Waqar had shared ten wickets between themselves in Test cricket. Waqar Younis ran through the lower order as the Kiwis were bowled out for 194 to lose by an innings 43 runs. Martin Crowe was not out on 68 off 143 balls with 4 boundaries to wage a lone battle for his side.
