OTD| Umpire Aleem Dar broke the record for officiating in the most ODIs when he stood in his 210th match in 2020

On this day in 2020, Aleem Dar scripted history by becoming the umpire to have officiated the most number of ODIs. The match between Zimbabwe and Pakistan turned out to be his 210th match as an on-field umpire. He overcame the record of Rudi Koertzen who had the previous record of officiating 209 ODIs as an on-field umpire.

Aleem was one of the best umpires in the last couple of decades. He was highly respected by the cricketing fraternity and was often famous for his cheeky personality. Some of his funny segments with the players made him one of the most memorable umpires. Apart from his funny side, the fans are aware of his precision as an on-field umpire.

More often than not, he made precise decisions. When he got the decision wrong, Dar used to be upset with it, showing how committed he was to being nearly perfect. After officiating the match between Pakistan and Zimbabwe, he scripted history. He not only became the on-field umpire to have most ODI matches but also became the on-field umpire to have hosted the most Tests and ODIs.

In the longest format of the game, he had broken the previous record back in 2019. During the match between Australia and New Zealand in December 2019, Dar was the on-field umpire for a record 129th instance. He broke the record of Steve Bucknor to become the umpire to have officiated the most number of Test matches. On the 16th of February 2000, Dar’s umpiring career began when he officiated the match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Dar won the David Shepherd Trophy for 3 consecutive seasons from 2009 to 2011. Before being an umpire, Aleem played FC cricket. He was a right-handed batter and a leg-break bowler. In total, Aleem has been the on-field umpire in 145 Tests, 231 ODIs, and 72 T20Is. After being a part of the ICC’s Elite panel of umpires for 19 years, Dar stepped down in March 2023.
