OTD | Trinibago Knight Riders beat St Kitts and Nevis Patriots to win their second Caribbean Premier League title in 2017

The 2017 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) final saw the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) emerge victorious, defeating St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in a thrilling contest to claim their second CPL title. Held at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, the final was one of the most exciting matches in CPL history, with twists and turns that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

The Knight Riders, led by Dwayne Bravo, had the upper hand early on as they restricted the Patriots to a modest total of 135/6 in their 20 overs. Javon Searles was instrumental in removing the dangerous Chris Gayle for just 1, finishing with figures of 2/29.

Sunil Narine also played a key role, delivering an exceptional spell of 1/8 in his four overs, including the crucial wicket of Evin Lewis. Kevon Cooper, continuing his fine form throughout the tournament, contributed with 2/12 in just two overs.

A fighting bowling performance from the Patriots!

Despite the low total, the Patriots’ bowling unit put up a fierce fight. Sheldon Cottrell struck back immediately by dismissing Sunil Narine and Dwayne Bravo in consecutive deliveries. Mohammad Hafeez also impressed, removing Colin Munro, who had scored a steady 29, and Darren Bravo for just 1 in his spell of 2/19. By the 15th over, the Knight Riders were struggling at 90/7, and the home crowd began to believe that an upset might be possible.

However, Kevon Cooper once again stepped up, this time with the bat. He played a match-winning knock, blasting two sixes in a rapid 29* off 14 balls. His partnership with Denesh Ramdin, who anchored the chase with a steady 26 off 31 deliveries, steered TKR to a nail-biting victory. Ramdin’s patience at the crease and Cooper’s explosive batting ensured that TKR chased down the target, securing their second CPL championship.
