New Zealand achieved their biggest-ever Test win when they beat Sri Lanka by a whopping 423 runs. The record was set during the second Test match, which was played in Christchurch. The Boxing Day game saw Trent Boult deliver his magic with the ball, as he took six wickets during the Sri Lankan first innings. 

New Zealand batted first and scored just 178 on the board as pacer Suranga Lakmal claimed 5/54 from his 19 overs. Tim Southee was the best batter for the hosts with his knock of 68 off just 65 balls, six hits to the fence, and three massive sixes. The next best batter for the hosts was BJ Watling with 46 runs from 90 balls.

Sri Lanka in their first innings were bowled out for just 104 to give the hosts a huge lead of 74 runs. Tim Southee set the tone with the wicket of Dimuth Karunaratne for 7 followed by the wicket of skipper Dinesh Chandimal for 6. The third wicket for the pacer was that of Danushka Gunathilaka for 8 runs. 

Colin De Grandhomme then got the wicket of Kusal Mendis for 15 to leave Sri Lanka reeling at 51/4. Roshan Silva and Angelo Mathews added 43 runs for the 5th wicket before Trent Boult showed his prowess with the ball. Boult had Roshan Silva and Niroshan Dickwella caught by Southee for 21 and 4 each. 

The pacer then got the wickets of Dilruwan Perera, Suranga Lakmal, Dushmanta Chameera, and Lahiru Kumara all out LBW. Angelo Mathews was left stranded on 33 off 88 balls having batted for 145 minutes with three hits to the fence. In their 2nd innings, New Zealand scored 585/4 with Tom Latham (176) and Henry Nicholls (162) leading the charge with the bat. Jeet Raval played a sedate knock of 74 off 162 balls while De Grandhomme scored 71 not out off 45 balls to set Sri Lanka’s target of 660 to win. 

The visitors were all out for 236 as they lost by 423 runs. Kusal Mendis top scored 67 while Dinesh Chandimal scored 56. Neil Wagner was the best bowler for the hosts in the second innings with 4/48 from 29 overs.
