The 2018 England tour of New Zealand for a two-match test series is iconic for several aspects. England headed into the series with an unprecedented record of 4 back-to-back series wins against the Black Caps. However, fortunes turned in favour of the Kiwis on the fifth occasion when they hosted England in 2018. The first test was scheduled from March 22nd to 26th.
On a pleasant morning at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand won the toss and elected to field first. What followed was a tale of deadly fast bowling that rampaged the English batting order. England batters barely managed to survive even a session of play at Eden Park.
New Zealand’s pace duo consisting of Trent Boult and Tim Southee made a brilliant display of fast bowling. The ever-so-frightening Trent Boult took charge of the new ball and swung it both ways off the bat of English opener Alastair Cook. Cook eventually fell victim to the lethal seam movement of Trent Boult as he edged a delivery to Tom Latham in the fifth over of the first innings. Trent Boult then bowled a wonderful inswinger to fox Joe Root, followed by the wicket of David Malan in consecutive overs.
Tim Southee soon joined Boult in making life difficult for English batters with consistent line and length deliveries of his own. He scalped the wickets of Stoneman, Bairstow, Moen Ali and Stuart Broad. Each of them bowled 10 overs to bundle out English batters for just 58 runs. Trent Boult claimed 6 wickets while Southee claimed four.
New Zealand batters played responsibly to get to a respectable first innings total of 427 runs. Kane Williamson (102) and Henry Nicholes (145*) scored centuries. James Anderson and Stuart Broad scalped 3 wickets each.
In the second innings, English batters displayed resilience and better efforts; however, they could only score 320 runs with half-centuries from Stoneman, Joe Root and Ben Stokes. New Zealand won the fixture by an innings and 49 runs. The second test ended in a tie, allowing New Zealand to beat England in a test series for the first time in 18 years.
