On this day in 2012, Sydney Sixers won the Champions League Twenty20(CL T20) and became the second Australian side to do so. New South Wales won the CL T20 in 2009 scripting history and Sydney Sixers followed suit with a title in South Africa. Sixers defeated the South African side Highveld Lions in that process.
Brilliant bowling display from Sydney Sixers
Captain Brad Haddin won the toss and elected to field first. His decision was proved right by his bowlers as they put up an enthralling bowling performance to restrict Highveld Lions to a low total of 121 in the first innings. The Lions’ batting order boasted of South African internationals like Quinton De Kock and Alviro Pietersen but looked helpless in front of the Sixers’ bowling attack. The experienced Kiwi all-rounder Nathan McCullum and Young pacer Josh Hazlewood bowled brilliantly as they both picked up 3 wickets. They were assisted by Mitchell Starc and left-arm spinner Steve O’Keefe. This dominating bowling display helped Sydney Sixers get an advantage over Highveld Lions as they had a low target to chase.
Convincing Chase to lift the title
The Sixers completely blew Highveld Lions out of the contest with their batting exhibition. Left-handed Michal Lumb and skipper Brad Haddin opened the innings for the Australian side and chased down the total without any hiccups. The Sixers did not even lose a single wicket in their run chase. The South African conditions suited Sydney Sixers as they batted flawlessly to overcome the Highveld Lions’ challenge in the second innings.
Michael Lumb was adjudged Man of the Match for his swashbuckling innings of 82 runs in the final. This was a historic win for Sydney Sixers as they reigned supreme in the global franchise tournament. No Australian side could replicate this feat after that which makes this victory even more special and the way in which the Sixers clinched the title showed their dominance in the tournament.
