OTD- Steve Waugh made his Test debut for Australia in 1985 

The Boxing Day Test is a major event in the Australian sports calendar, and on December 26, 1985, one of Australia’s best captains, Steve Waugh, made his Test debut against India at the MCG. Despite his poor start, he played a record number of Test matches and was regarded as one of the game’s toughest opponents.

For some Australian cricketers, it is a huge honor to play in this annual match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), and in some cases, it is a dream that has not yet been realized. But such was not the case with Steve Waugh, who made his Boxing Day debut 27 years ago against a strong Indian team. Waugh was not only one of Australia’s most successful leaders, despite his lackluster performance in that match, but he also played in a record amount of Test matches throughout the course of his nearly 19-year career, ranking second only to Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting.

Prior to being selected, Waugh was a great player in the domestic arena. He continuously scored hundreds in the Sheffield Shield, and a few days before Christmas 1985, he was confident he would make the squad if he had a good performance in a match against Victoria for New South Wales (NSW).

For the first Test match Waugh was in the Australian team, but didn’t get chance so he had to wait for second Test match. The morning after Christmas, Waugh became the 335th player to wear the Australian national colors. The debut for Steve Waugh didn’t go as plan as he struggled against Indian bowlers. However the Boxing Day test match between Australia and India ended in draw. But on one had idea that he would go on to play 168 more Test matches, 325 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and amassing over 18,000 runs.
