OTD | Star Afghanistan bowler Rashid Khan was born in 1998 

Afghanistan cricket has been the fastest growing in international cricket for a while now. One of the most well-known players to grace the field for Afghanistan is none other than Rashid Khan. The spinner has become a toast of the cricketing world for his amazing bowling and child-like exuberance on the field. 

Born on the 20th of September 1998, Rashid Khan has established himself as one of the world’s best spin bowlers. The right-arm spinner has flummoxed some of the best batters in the world with his mastery of the ball. 

Rashid Khan’s influence is not only felt by Afghanistan cricket but also by world cricket on the whole. The Afghan star is a huge name in franchise cricket with millions of fans admiring his talents. 

Rashid Khan: Cricket’s golden boy

Cricket fans across the world first heard the name of Rashid Khan when he made his debut in the ODI format against Zimbabwe. Rashid was just 17 when he took his first steps on the field. In his debut game, the young bowler picked the wicket of Tendai Chisoro and gave 30 runs. 

Since then Rashid Khan has gone onto play 104 ODI matches and picked 185 wickets. His best of 7/18 is ranked in the top few best performances by a bowler in the fifty-over format. 

Rashid Khan’s T20I debut came a few days later against Zimbabwe where he bowled 4 overs and picked 1/20. His only wicket in the game was that of Sikandar Raza who scored 59 runs but the mastery of Rashid Khan was noticed. 

In the Test format, Rashid Khan made his debut versus India in 2018 where he bowled 34.5 overs. His 2nd wickets from the game were that of Ajinkya Rahane for 10 and Ishant Sharma for 8 as Afghanistan lost the match inside 2 overs. 

The Afghanistan star was the fastest-ever bowler to reach 100 wickets in the ODI format. Rashid Khan achieved the feat in just 44 matches before Nepal bowler Sandeep Lamichhane overtook the landmark. In the T20I format, Rashid Khan is the record holder for the fastest to 100 wickets. The Afghanistan star got to the mark in just 54 games during the game against Pakistan in 2021.
