Aravinda de Silva, one of the finest batters to have played for Sri Lanka, celebrates his 58th birthday today (October 17). Known for his aggressive batting style, the former Sri Lankan captain was equally effective against spin and pacers. His illustrious career was decorated by victory in the 1996 World Cup, Sri Lanka’s only title in the premier 50-over tournament. Having represented The Lions in both Test and ODIs, Aravinda also played in English county cricket.
He made his debut in international cricket in the Test format at the age of 18 against England at the Lord’s. Young Aravinda was known for playing quick-fire knocks but failed to convert them into big scores. Many criticized him for throwing away his wicket. However, he finished his career as a mature batter with 6361 Test runs and 9284 ODI runs in his account. He also has 32 international tons and two double centuries in the longest format of the game.
He did not have a good outing in the 1999 World Cup but continued to play until the 2003 edition before hanging up his boots. He was appointed captain in ODIs and Tests but failed to make an impact. Aravinda immediately resigned from the role after the team struggled in the 1992 World Cup.
Aravinda will get into any World XI side: 1996 World Cup winning-captain Arjuna Ranatunga
Aravinda was one of the key players in Sri Lanka’s successful campaign in the 1996 ODI World Cup. Especially in the final against Australia, the right-handed batter led from the front with a brilliant century. Chasing 242 in Lahore, his 107 not out off 124 balls was crucial. Years after their historic achievement, World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga heaped massive praise on their middle-order batter. Notably, Aravinda added a partnership of 97 runs for the fifth wicket with Ranatunga in the final.
“If you take the 96 side, barring Aravinda (de Silva), everyone was good but not that good, but everyone was committed. They were keen on winning as a team, not after individual success. Aravinda was on another level. You can’t compare him to anyone, even now. He’s a different class, but everyone else was doing just enough. They played roles, he was toying with class,” Ranatunga said.
“Aravinda will get into any World XI side with his eyes closed. Because he is the most talented batter this country has produced in this country by far. For me, the next guy is Roy Das. Then you have Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardena and Jayasuriya, but there’s a huge gap for me because I had the opportunity to bat on the other side. I saw Aravinda, not from 80 yards. Mainly I saw him from 30 yards away, so I know the talent,” he added.
