There have been some iconic opening pairs in cricket that have given us some great starts in ODI cricket. The likes of Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist, Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag are some of the best opening duos with a lot of massive partnerships. These are the duo who are responsible for giving some great starts in these ODI games and setting the tone.
Though we normally think that an opening partnership over 100+ is enough to set the tone for the match, the cricketers always come up with some big surprises. There have been plenty of games where we have seen some massive partnerships for the first wicket that have put the bowlers under pressure straight away. These partnerships will always be some of the most iconic ones we have ever witnessed, but there is one opening partnership that has still stood the test of time for the last 5 years and was achieved on this auspicious day.
Shai Hope and John Campbell create history
The year was 2019 and it was on the 5th of May when the 1st match of the tri-series between West Indies, Ireland and Bangladesh had started. The first match saw the West Indies taking on Ireland in Dublin. The West Indies batting first with openers Shai Hope and John Campbell to start proceedings. The Irish might not be a high-ranking side, but their bowling did have the potential to cause some damage. However, it was the West Indies openers who were destroying the bowlers with some destructive batting. The openers together set a partnership of 365 with both the batters scoring 170+ and batting for 47.2 overs.
This is currently the highest opening stand in ODI cricket and it is yet to be broken by anyone. The West Indies in the end had ended their innings on a total of 381 runs which the Ireland batters were unable to chase down at all. This was a great display of batting by Campbell and Hope which showed the proper explosive Caribbean flair of batting we have come to know West Indies for. Overall it is a record that should be celebrated by every West Indian cricket fan.
